Murder charge filed when victim dies 22 years after Muscatine attack | Crime
Title (Max 100 Characters)
A former Muscatine man who served a prison sentence for an attack that left a woman a quadriplegic is now charged with that woman’s murder.
Hiram Serrano, 48, was convicted of attempted murder and willful injury after he attacked Theresa Jackson November 14, 1990. Muscatine County Attorney Alan Ostergren said Serrano slashed Jackson’s throat and struck her neck, leaving her a quadriplegic.
A jury found Serrano guilty and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. He served nearly 13 years in prison before he was paroled in 2004.
Jackson died October 5, 2012, nearly 22 years after the attack. Ostergren says Jackson died of medical conditions suffered because of the injuries from the 1990 attack, and that the medical examiner ruled Jackson’s death a homicide.
Hiram Serrano was arrested Thursday, February 21, 2013. He was charged with first-degree murder, and he was held in the Muscatine County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
