Family of plane crash victim turns to faith to deal with grief

Cyndi and David Luth of Muscatine, Iowa are grieving the loss of their 22-year-old son Stephen. He died Friday in a plane crash in Kansas, on the way to Council Bluffs. Of the five people on the plane, only one survived.

Stephen had just graduated college days before. A business administration major at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, he was on his way to a Christian youth rally, part of a new job he was going to start this week with a youth ministry called Teen Mania.

His parents remember their son’s faith in every story they tell, reading the words he wrote to them on paper plates, a family tradition.

“Mom and Dad, thank you for all that you do,” he wrote in one of his notes. ”I am blessed to have you both. God has a plan for each of us.”

84-year-old hurt when semi and ATV collide

An 84-year-old Burlington, Iowa man was hospitalized after the ATV he was riding was hit by a semi.

Police said the crash happened just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2012 on Highway 99 at 170th Street in Des Moines County.

John Wagenbach was eastbound on the ATV when he pulled out of a driveway and onto Highway 99.   He reportedly pulled into the path of a northbound semi.

Police said the semi driver braked and swerved to the left but the ATV driver also headed northbound and drove in the middle of the road.  The semi driver then swerved back to the right to avoid the ATV, but the ATV also pulled to the right.

That’s when the semi rear-ended the ATV.

Wagenbach was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

The semi driver, 34-year-old Chad Cutkomp of Columbus Junction, Iowa, was not hurt.

When Only The Best Will Do

Trinity Muscatine celebrates expansion at groundbreaking ceremony

Staff at Trinity Muscatine broke ground Monday on a major expansion and renovation.

The 18.5 million dollar expansion includes the emergency department, operating area, laboratory and radiology departments.

The project addressed concerns about space and technology in the facility. The ER was built in 1979 to handle about 3,500 patients. In 2011, about 15,000 patients were treated in the same space. That number is expected to continually go up.

Patients will notice shorter wait times in the ER and more privacy with their own rooms.

There will be 30-thousand square feet of new construction and 26,300 square feet of renovation work. Plans call for the project to be complete by 2013.
